The Nandi Day Bed is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional South Asian charpai or khatiya, a form that remains an integral part of rural homes across northern India. Designed by Klemens Grund, the piece refines this typology through precise material articulation and an economy of means.
Crafted from solid wood, the bed’s defining feature lies in its subtly curved slats, achieved through a specialized technique that slots a smaller piece of wood into a larger one. This approach minimizes material waste while creating a distinctive visual detail—contrasting grain patterns at the ends of the slats. “When technical constraints create a beautiful ornament in the end, it is always a gift from the universe,” Grund notes.
The Day Bed is accompanied by a custom mattress and loose cushions, referencing the traditional Indian gadda. Stuffed with organic cotton and hand-tufted using traditional methods, the upholstery is available in handspun cotton and silk textiles from Zanav. “It was important to fill the mattress with a traditional and organic material. This way, the whole body can feel the authenticity of the idea.”
Each piece in the Nandi collection is fitted with custom-designed felt pads, seamlessly integrated into a groove at the base of the legs. This detail enhances durability while remaining visually unobtrusive, reinforcing the collection’s commitment to refined craftsmanship and material integrity.
